In 2001, street artist Shepard Fairey founded the clothing brand Obey to continue his activist work in the fashion industry. Inspired by his previous works, Obey brings to life the politically charged illustrations and slogans created by Fairey. This includes his logo, directly derived from the "André the Giant Has a Posse" stickers created by Fairey and other students in 1989. Originally a private joke within the underground culture, the André the Giant movement gained global popularity and marked the beginning of Fairey's international career. Accompanied by the slogan "Obey," the giant figure became a strong symbol of dissent and anti-authoritarianism that instantly appealed to the youth of street culture. More recently, the Obey brand has also made its mark with campaign posters for Barack Obama featuring the slogans "Hope" and "Progress."
